The first in a series called "Rethinking British Cinema" - "dedicated to innovative approaches to British cinema". Like most collections of essays some aspects of the subject are well covered and others almost totally neglected. Most lacking is a comprehensive survey of the connections between Gainsborough and Gaumont British and later Rank. A review of the Denis Gifford filmography (Gainsborough and related films) makes me wonder at why some films are included in this list but not mentioned in the main text (Man of Arran, most of Hitchcock's British sound films, the Inspector Hornleigh series). Duncan Petrie's essay on cinematography and K.J. Donnelly's on music are the most informative probably because these are subjects not well covered elsewhere.
