This month (August 1999) there is only one candidate for star of the month: Alfred Hitchcock. He was born one hundred years ago this month (on the 13th).
There's not a lot I can add to the huge pile of writing about the man and his films. He's Britain's most celebrated film maker - someone who obtained popular as well as artistic acclaim. He mastered silent film and, when sound arrived, immediately mastered that medium with Britain's first talkie Blackmail. He was one of the few British film makers whose films were exportable, and inevitably he ended up in Hollywood, which he soon conquered. He even became a master of television.
His American films are more celebrated than his English ones, but the English ones have a charm that the slicker Hollywood product lacks. Minor gems like Rich and Strange or Young and Innocent are overshadowed by films with more star power, but are rewarding both in themselves and as examples of his little obsessions.
