Stanley Holloway was an entertainment institution for the best part of forty years. He succeeded in concert parties, variety, Music Hall, films, plays and even conquered Broadway.
He started his stage career as a boy soprano. When his voice broke he drifted into concert party work which kept him busy until the war when he joined the Connaught Rangers. After the war he resumed his career and got his first big break in the long-running show The Co-optimists in 1921.
He made one silent film in 1921, but it took the talkie version of the Co-optimists to properly introduce him to cinema audiences. His cinema career continued through the thirties playing the lead in quota films. In the forties his roles got smaller, but the films got better and he appeared in several classics of the period.
His career got its biggest boost in the fifties when he originated the part of Alfred Doolittle in My Fair Lady on Broadway.
His son is the actor Julian Holloway.
