Mary Clare as Jane Marryot in "Cavalcade"

Mary Clare is one of the most thorough actresses on our stage. She works herself in the most satisfactory way "into the skin" of every part she plays. This was almost literally true when she played Tondeleyo, the African breaker of hearts, in the original production of White Cargo. There was a great deal of Tondeleyo's skin to be seen, and Miss Clare painted it all a rich dark brown. In Cavalcade, she represented with distinction and great success the changes in Jane Marryot's appearance from 1899 to 1918. Here she is shown in the final scene proposing a toast to England's return to dignity and greatness.
