Laurence Olivier as Sir Toby Belch in "Twelfth Night"

Laurence Olivier generally relies on his good looks, romantic personality and virility of style to bring him success in the theatre, but when he wishes he can disguise himself beyond all recognition, This picture shows him as he appeared at the "Old Vic" when, by way of variety after playing Hamlet, he took upon him the dilapidated appearance and deplorable habits of that humorous old toper, Sir Toby Belch. The contrast between this and the scholar of the tragic play was complete enough to startle everybody who saw it.
