Martin-Harvey is one of those actors who have appeared so long in romantic costume parts that their appearance in ordinary dress is strange. Practically the only modern part in which he has scored one of his outstanding successes has been the Burgomaster of Stilemonde in Maeterlinck's war play of that name. Here he is seen in the part which is, more than any other, identified with his name - Sydney Carton in The Only Way. It is to be observed how strongly Sir John, like all great costume actors, has the sense of period. His Carton is a man altogether of another age than ours.
