Look at the meek German here pictured, with his brush of hair, his pince-nez, his straggling moustache. At first glance, he is as unlike Jack Hulbert, the light-hearted Gaumont-British star, as anybody could well be: at a second, the actor's exuberant personality comes smiling through. Mr. Hulbert does not often wish to disguise himself, but does so with excellent burlesque effect on occasion. Those who remember certain performances he gave in his young days are not surprised. They know that he could, if he had chosen, have been a good character-actor.
