Fay Compton is, by general consent, the most moving Ophelia that has been seen by the present generation of playgoers. From these two pictures of Miss Compton, in private life and in her almost unbearable pathetic "mad scene," it can be realized how little the actress relied on such extraneous help as make-up could give her. This Ophelia's madness came from within, and its moving quality lay in its very gentleness, and in Miss Compton's suggestion that Ophelia's mind was not yet gone completely beyond control - that she still had momentary flashes of sanity.
