To say that Elisabeth Bergner's stage make-up is a masterpiece because it does not exist would be a paradox, but it would come uncommonly near the truth. This most appealing of actresses uses a make-up on the stage apparently the same as the one she wears in real life, and never disguises herself at all. In every part she plays she expresses the same wistful charm; and even when she plays one of the great classical heroines like Rosalind, it is the part that yields to Bergner, and not Bergner to the part.
