Edith Evans as the Nurse in "Romeo and Juliet"

The greater the actress, the less she needs to depend upon her make-up for her effects. Edith Evans is one of our greatest actresses and has a range stretching from her brilliant coquette Millamant in The Way of the World to her thick-bodied, rheumatic Nurse in Romeo and Juliet. This picture shows how little aid she wants from paint and pencil. The impression of age, of heavy cunning, and of a peasant's courseness of fibre which were in her playing of the part, all came from within, and are not to be caught by a camera or easily suggested by an artist.
