Dame Gracie Fields (1898 - 1979). One of the all-time great stars, Fields was just approaching the peak of her career at this point and would soon be the highest paid star in the world. The marriage to Archie Pitt didn't last and she married comic and director Monte Banks. At the start of the war she temporarily moved to the US to avoid Banks being interned (he was born Italian). This caused a furore in the press and though she came back and worked extensively at home and with the troops abroad, she never quite got back the same level of affection with the public. Banks died in 1950. She eventually retired to Capri.
