Owen Nares (1888 - 1943). It's not a terribly flattering picture of one of the 20s leading matinee idols. Before Ivor Novello came along he was the big heart-throb of his generation both in the West End and on screen. His first film was Dandy Donovan in 1914, but the early 20s was his golden period. His stage experience meant he was in demand when talkies came, but he was past his best and was mostly bland support for rising female stars (such as Jessie Matthews in There Goes the Bride, and Gracie Fields in The Show Goes On).
